11/07/2006 100 minutes - Zinedine ZidaneThe infamous head-butt by the French Talisman Zinedine Yazid Zidane aimed at Marco Matterazzi's ribs will, in future as in present, be reflected as a moment of madness by the (not many people know this) VOLATILE master... But Zizou, i feel, must be given a chance... no, not to explain his actions... but a chance to be understood... You may wonder why a cool mind, subject to so many verbal tortures in his career, be given any time after his horrendous action. True some feel that is only a blemish on a glittering career and forget it. But a man, who so coolly slotted in from the spot just a 100 minutes ago turns into a monster ramming ribs!!! Something is definitely wrong.... No, it is not the adrenaline or the aggression earned during those 100 minutes. I refuse to believe... I believe this is exactly the time when FIFA steps up to provide us with "Sledging Rules". It is clear from the videos he was provoked... Zidane's team-mate William Gallas claims Matterazzi called him a "Terrorist". To some, it is a joke... To others, it is another way of Sledging... But for Zidane, it was something much deeper... worse than a racist comment.
History:We all know Zidane has roots in Algeria. The European colonialism in the 19th century saw France take up Algeria as a colony and what was worse.. exploit the Muslims there. Only the non-Muslims were given French citizenship ('colons'). Algeria, being a battleground during the two World Wars, was discontent and revolted. Some Algerians even began Armed revolutions. And after independence, the colons returned to France where, it is alleged, they were not accepted by the natives and had to resort to armed means.
I am not supportive of the terrorist means of the colons. Neither do i approve of, the armed revolution of the Islamic Algerians. You can call them TERRORISTS. But Zinedine, who is a descendant of one of them, has no case to answer. The man toils hard for the unprivileged. He has organized beneficiary matches. He has gone tours during seasons to propagate welfare. A thorough gentleman, he is a boon to mankind. Welfare of his fellow-beings has been his motive throughout his life... Imagine such a man being termed a TERRORIST...
Zizou is a human being after all... He may ignore verbal abuses. But to touch him at the sweetest spot in his heart is something nobody appreciates. This is where FIFA should stamp down its authority (and not on how a player should celebrate his goal). Cricket Australia has certain sledging rules: You may swear. But no personal/racial abuse.... Mr. Blatter could take a leaf out of CAB's book and impose a rule on sledging in football as well. KICK RACISM OUT OF FOOTBALL campaign can be complemented with this... A suitable ban (red card, 2match ban and the like) on any personal comment would help. Thus we can draw a much broader line between gamesmanship (putting your opponent off-track) and abuse.
I must compliment Matterazzi's knowledge of history though he could do with a lesson of using it at the right time.. 113th minute of extra time is definitely not the time to discuss history.. Also, it'd be better for a guy from Mussolini's country to stay shut when the past is being discussed... |
